no filter! a favorite palazzo on Via Sistina, near the Spanish Steps, Rome, January 2025

January is usually a time for staying cozy and warm indoors. But for me, it’s the perfect month to get outside and walk all over Rome. The weather is generally mild, and there tend to be fewer tourists in town. The sky is often a crystalline blue and the air crisp, making a walk through the city both pleasant and invigorating.

A stroll down just a handful of Roman streets feels like browsing through history. You can choose a focus for the day—ancient, baroque, brutalist? Having a theme can help keep the sheer abundance of the city from feeling overwhelming. But I prefer to walk freely, letting my eye lead me. Because I live here, I don’t have to make the most of every outing. I have time to ping-pong between eras, to notice something new even on a street I’ve walked a hundred times.

Come take a walk with me in Rome! Here’s one of my favorite January walks as a way to finish the month with a good dose of calm and beauty.
