This month I’m bringing you with me as I walk through a Roman street on my way to an appointment. While I could share a video - and tell me if you’d prefer that in the future - I think it’s nice to rest one’s eyes and just listen in to the sounds of life happening somewhere else. I’ve left the street unnamed because it could be anywhere in Rome where neighborhood life unfolds as it always has. Because so many of the shop signs that line the streets retain their original typography some days I feel like I’m time-travelling as I walk around doing errands like popping into the butcher’s or an old-style merceria haberdashery.
Note: I say “old-style” a lot in this audio…

A start to the Roman Summer
Quick question for you before you read: Grazie mille for answering, and now on to a taste of summer in Rome ⬇️ Apparently it’s summertime already and I’m not ready. It’s 90 F/ 32 C degrees so I’m finally wearing sandals. Even though in May we had had a few unseasonably warm days, I stuck with Spring sneakers* …
Another thing that’s “old style” is the wonderful variety of different shops, eateries and other places of business on a single block. You just don’t see that anymore in the US.
PS: I understand the reason for anonymity, but I’m still curious to know what street this is! 😉
Amazing the way a whole world opens up in one pass down a street. Great idea for a post. I love your note about the typography. I've always thought there would be a great coffee table book to be made of the graphics and typography on sugar packets at bars (which are obviously usually either the logo of the bar or the coffee served at the bar). But the type and graphics on those are just the essence of cool. This sign is right up there as well.
